"THE COMIC BOOK KIDS "

This post was concieved for The Outsider Art Club theme ," Kids at Play." One of my favorite pastimes as a kid was, ..." THE HUNT." Before the days of the comic shop, a comic book fan had to hunt for hidden gems of saturated adventure. 7-11, Your local drug store, the Grocery store, Garage sales, flea markets , and the dirty stinky Nostalgia shop. Any of these places could contain the missing current issue or a past issue that would complete the puzzle and unlock the keys to the universe. My favorite of these was 7-11. A one stop shop for all the essentials. Comics, SLURPEES with superheroes on the cups, and candy , candy , candy.( ZOTS and POP ROCKS were my fav.) Many a summer day was spent with my two best buddies in hot pursuit of ,..." COMICS." Special thanks to my 2 best buddies DARRYL YOUNG , and my brother JAMES BARBER , for riding their bikes for miles on end with me to find the missing links.

This preliminary drawing is for the "Outsider Art" club blog. The theme for this late entry was ,..." When i grow up." Being the wisenheimer that i was as a child , i would often tell those who asked that i was going to be a "Playboy photographer " when i grew up. Hardie har har.

SHAZAM -" DOTS THEY CRIED !!"

Thanks for all your feedback on tones,...no tones. The flavor of this peice is definitely "old school " and the majority liked toneless flat color. Now that i've been able to step back from it for a moment, flat is definitely the way to go. I've also added the finishing touches by adding a comic dots halftone pattern, and a yellowing newsprint paper texture to complete the comics/pop art feel. Thanks again everyone for the input.

SHAZAM ROUGH / CU

Here is further development on one of the Shazam (Captain Marvel) doodles that i had posted earlier. This is final rough and clean up. I am going to color this up next and have some ideas that will complete the illo nicely. (By the way,...the slug guy he's holding is his arch villian Mr. Mind. I really like the notion that his hatred of Captain Marvel stems from the Captain not taking him seriously.I wanted this illo to reflect that.)

BATMAN EVOLUTION ( Evolved )
Being a child of the 70's / 80's,... i chose to do my version of that era's batman. ( A big salute and debt of gratitude to Batman artists of that era who's art inspired me to draw in the first place. Neal Adams,Jim Aparo,Jose Garcia Lopez, and Alex Toth's Superfriends Batman .
